Executive compensation has become a focal point for growing stakeholder scrutiny, resurgent principal-agency problems, and general excess. Reviewing the complexity of the argument on both sides reveals three key challenges for compensation schemes: 1) the absolute level of remuneration, 2) its linkage to performance, and 3) governance process to set and manage compensation. Working through these challenges is often a complex issue, especially when there is validity in the challenges and arguments on both sides.
